Shower Mixers Explained: What Are They & How To Use Them Safely

Shower mixers can be a great way to get the shower you desire, every time. It sounds great, right?

A shower mixer, which is quite simple, allows you to adjust the temperature of your shower. It does this by taking the hot and the cold water flows and mixing them before they are released from the showerhead. You can choose the temperature of your shower water. Although this may seem like something your shower already does (and it might be), there are some key differences between electric showers and other options. There are also a few add-ons that can make your shower mixer even more useful.

Concealed Valve or Bar Valve

If your shower is not connected to your bath taps then the most common mixer shower has a bar valve that allows you to control the temperature and flow. They allow you to control the temperature and flow of your shower.

Another common type is the concealed valve. These can have one to three controls depending on their use. The one below has three handles. The top and bottom control the flow of water to two outlets, while the central one regulates the temperature. You can use the two outlets to control water flow, whether it is an overhead fixed shower, a hand shower with a riser rail, or somebody jets.

Thermostatic Cartridges

Mixer showers can be problematic in that the water is not delivered to you on time. A mixer shower mixes hot and cold water to achieve the desired temperature, unlike an electric shower that heats water at the same time. This will allow you to control the temperature more easily and flow faster. However, if there is a cold tap in your house, cold water will not be flowing, but hot water will. Ouch.

Modern mixer showers come with thermostatic cartridges. You should make sure that you have one when you purchase a shower. The thermostatic cartridge measures the temperature of the hot and cold water it receives to ensure that they are equal. If one is lower, the other will follow suit. The hot water will slow down to maintain temperature if the cold water supply is low. The warm water will shut off completely if the cold water supply is cut off completely.

It works in reverse too so that even if hot water fails, you won't be suddenly flooded with cold (a chilling thought). A thermostat cartridge is a safety feature and comfort feature that can be added to any mixer shower kit.

Cooltouch

The heat of the mixer valve is another important safety feature in mixer showers. The temperature valve could heat up significantly if it is used for extended periods. Cooltouch ensures that the temperature valve is always safe to use. This is particularly important for the elderly and children, who are more susceptible to the high temperatures of the valve.

Connect a shower head to a bath tap or overflow filler

A mixer shower can be used to add your shower to your bath tub. You can even use an overflow bath filler to control both the shower head (or heads) and the bath overflow filler from the same shower valve. This saves space, money, and looks chic and modern.

How to connect shower heads to bath taps: Please note that mixer showers cannot be connected directly to existing bath taps. To make this happen, you'll need a new mixer bath tap that can connect with the shower hose. These taps can connect to the shower hose and will have a lever or other similar device that allows for you to select whether the water comes from the taps or the showerhead. It is easy to add the shower to this setup by following the manufacturer's instructions.

Shower mixer taps are usually sold in one unit. This means that you get both the taps and the showerhead together. However, there are other options available that allow you to install them yourself.

Electric or digital mixer showers

A basic mixer shower is a great choice for most households and can often provide a better experience than an electric one. There are two additional steps that you can take to enhance your showering experience.

Power Showers A power shower is similar to a mixer shower but has a pump that ensures the water pressure remains high. This is the perfect shower for those who live in low water pressure homes or those who want a powerful one.

Digital Showers: Digital showers are available in electric or mixer models. However, they have special control. The processor box controls digital showers. It can be hidden or installed far from the shower. You can also control the shower with a tablet or smartphone. This allows you to program the shower to your needs. This will ensure that the temperature is always set to the desired level, as well as the safety features such as cool-touch technology and a thermostatic valve.
